Acadeum Course Sharing

Online Consortia Courses

Tuskegee University (TU) partners with Acadeum, a College Consortium of accredited institutions offering shared online courses. These courses allow students to stay on track for graduation when TU courses are unavailable or scheduling conflicts exist.

Advisors, Department Chairs, and Instructors can access the Acadeum catalog of online courses after being added as an authorized user by the Acadeum Administrator.

Key Points

  • Count as institutional credit
  • Appear on TU transcripts as TU courses
  • Impact GPA and degree progress
  • Charged at TU’s standard tuition rate
  • Most are asynchronous and fully online

Why Acadeum?

  •  Helps students graduate on time
  • Expands course options, especially for summer/winter
  • Supports flexibility for off-campus learners
  • Provides a structured, faculty-reviewed process

Benefits for Students

  • Enhanced course options, including elective courses
  • Course options for summer and winter
  • Opportunity to take a desired course that is not offered at TU
  • Help support students to graduate on time

Acadeum Usage Policy

  • Acadeum is primarily used for:
  • Graduating Seniors Juniors
  • Sophomores entering a professional program

Appropriate Use Cases

  • Required course is full or unavailable
  • Scheduling conflicts or course rotation issues
  • Internship, study away, or off-campus constraints

Inappropriate Use Cases

  • A student wants to take a course via Acadeum for convenience when the same or equivalent course is available at Tuskegee during the same term.
  • A student wishes to use Acadeum to avoid Tuskegee course requirements or grading standards.
  • Non-graduating students missing electives (requests for electives will be approved on a case-by-case basis)
  • Course sharing is proposed for non-academic reasons that do not align with the stated goals of this policy.
Students needing Acadeum to meet financial aid and scholarship requirements will be approved on a case-by-case basis.

*The Office of the Provost may advise on any Acadeum Requests.

Student Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Be enrolled full-time at TU during the academic term in which they are seeking to take a course. Acadeum courses will be considered in determining full-time status.
  2. Be in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or better). Students who are on academic probation are NOT eligible to enroll in Acadeum courses.
  3. Be in good academic standing with prior Acadeum courses (students who have failed two or more Acadeum courses may not be approved to take additional Acadeum courses).
  4. Be financially cleared at TU in the academic term in which the student seeks to enroll in Acadeum courses.

How to Register
Students who believe that they would benefit from enrolling in a course through Acadeum should contact their Academic Advisor or Department Chair for their major. The University will approve courses on an individual student basis.

For students (TU students are not given access to the Acadeum Catalog)

  1. Students must meet with a TU Faculty Member (Advisor, Department Head, or Dean) to discuss the need/desire for a course.
  2. Students and TU faculty must review the evaluation.
  3. If it is determined that the student truly needs a course, then the student must verify that they are FINANCIALLY CLEARED.
  4. They must also verify that they have completed PRE-REGISTRATION.
  5. If the course is not currently offered at TU, then the TU Faculty may reach out to the Acadeum Admin.*

For Advisors/Dept. Heads/Deans
Before Recommending a Course:

  • Assess student readiness for asynchronous learning
  • Consider prior academic performance
  • Confirm the course isn't available at TU this term
  1. TU Faculty contacts the Acadeum Administrator to set up Acadeum Access.
  2.  TU Faculty searches Acadeum catalog for a Consortia course(s) that is equivalent to a TU course(s)
  3. TU Faculty maps/approves the course(s).
  4. Notify the Acadeum Administrator that a course has been identified.
  5. TU Faculty will receive a link to submit the Enrollment Request.
  6. The Enrollment Request will be submitted to the Acadeum Administrator.
  7. The request will be reviewed by the Acadeum Administrator, Registrar, Financial Aid, and the Bursar.
    • Each office has at least five (5) days to approve the request.
  8. Students new to Acadeum will receive a link from Tuskegee University Notifications to submit their basic contact information.
  9. If approved, the Acadeum Administrator will register the student for the Acadeum course.
  10.  The student and TU Faculty will be notified once the enrollment request has been submitted to the Teaching Institution (TI).
  11. The TI will either accept or deny the request.
  12. If accepted, the Registrar will create appropriate placeholders to track student progress.
  13. Acadeum will contact the Bursar for billing (students will be billed at TU’s current tuition rate).
  14. Students will receive a Welcome Letter from the TI giving instructions on accessing and "attending" the course.

* If TU offers the same course during the same term, students will be allowed to register for Acadeum ONLY if there is a scheduling conflict that will delay the student's required course sequence.

Enrollment requests CAN ONLY be made by Department Heads/Instructors or Academic Advisors. Contact Ms. JaNeen N. Roberts (jroberts1@tuskegee.edu) if you have any questions. For emails, please use the following format: Acadeum Request for [STUDENT NAME and ID].

Mapping/Approving Courses:
The Office of the Provost, Deans, Department Heads, and Academic Advisors collaborate to approve a list of consortia courses that will be made available to students. In choosing courses, they review course syllabi, faculty credentials, and additional assessments of learning outcomes data.

TU functions as Home Institution (HI) and will also operate as a Teaching Institution (TI) beginning Summer 2024. As an HI, TU faculty will approve courses for their students from the inventory of courses within the consortia to which they belong. A HI's preference for consortium-based courses is based on the premises that:

  • These courses are eligible for financial aid.
  • Grades will positively impact GPA.
  • They can establish full- or part-time status for students.

Course Billing
Tuskegee University will bill the student for courses offered through Acadeum at the current on-campus tuition rate, which varies depending on the student's current enrollment status and the number of hours for which they are registered. Payments must be made in accordance with the University's existing payment policies and deadlines.

All payments and financial aid will be processed through TU.

Students with outstanding financial obligations are not permitted to take Acadeum courses.

For information about your overall bill or paying your bill, contact the Bursar’s Office at (334) 724-4385

Notes from the Registrar

  • There is a limit to the number of course credits a student can take via Acadeum.
  • Acadeum is not set up for students to take all courses within a semester.
  • Students cannot drop or withdraw from a TU class and then register for the same class on Acadeum.

For courses from Acadeum to count towards your scholarship, you must be registered for the course at TU. When the grade is provided, we add it to your Transcript.

  • Summer Registration
Students will not be enrolled in Acadeum Summer Courses during the Spring Semester unless they are preregistered during the TU Summer Preregistration period (contact the Office of the Registrar for dates).
    • The maximum number of Summer credits allowed for full-time students is 9-10 (with a 4-credit course included)
      • Any deviation from the above requires approval from the Office of the Provost.
      • EXCEPTIONS: Social Work majors enrolled in the required internship.
    • To receive or use Financial Aid, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits.
  •  Students Requesting Courses
At this time, students can only request classes through their Department Heads or Advisor.

Drop/Withdraw
If you wish to drop or withdraw from a consortium class, contact the Acadeum Administrator.

Please note that Acadeum is a supplemental option to a student’s course load and should only be utilized when necessary to support timely academic progress. It is not a guaranteed tool for fulfilling course requirements, and all requests are subject to approval based on institutional guidelines and policies. In some instances, the more traditional Transfer Student method may be the best option.

If you cannot find an approved course on the Acadeum website that meets your needs, or if you require general assistance, please contact Ms. JaNeen N. Roberts, Acadeum Administrator, at jroberts1@tuskegee.edu or 334-724-4238/334-339-5040. For emails and voicemail, please provide the course you are looking for. Include your name and the TU course that you are trying to match. Over [3,000] courses are available, and we can work to get one approved for you.
